چکیده
ABSTRACT We study the relative fractions of quenched and star-forming satellite galaxies in Satellites Around Galactic Analogs (SAGA) survey Exploration Local VolumE (ELVES) program, two nearby complementary samples Milky Way-like that take different approaches to identify faint galaxy populations. cross-check validate sample cuts selection criteria, as well explore effects star-formation definitions when determining fraction Way analogues. find mean ELVES (〈QF〉), derived using a specific star formation rate (sSFR) threshold, decreases from ∼50 per cent ∼27 after applying cut absolute magnitude match SAGA (〈QF〉SAGA ∼9 cent). show these results are consistent for alternative definitions. Furthermore, remain virtually unchanged an additional surface brightness. Using consistently sSFR limit both samples, we cumulative number satellites broadly agree. briefly radial trends finding general agreement host function radius. Statistics of Satellite Galaxies around Milky Way-like Hosts
We calculate the probability that a Milky-Way-like halo in the standard cosmological model has the observed number of Magellanic Clouds (MCs). The statistics of the number of MCs in the ΛCDM model are in good agreement with observations of a large sample of SDSS galaxies. Under the sub-halo abundance matching assumption of a relationship with small scatter between galaxy r-band luminosities and...
متن کاملModeling the Milky-Way Satellite galaxies
We revisit the Milky Way satellite problem using a semi-analytical model of galaxy formation and compare the predicted luminosity function to recent result from the SDSS. With cosmic photoionization, the luminosity function can be brought into broad agreement with the data between −15 < MV < −2. This improvement over previous semi-analytical model results (e.g., Benson et al. 2002) is from our ...
متن کاملThe Impact of Inhomogeneous Reionization on the Satellite Galaxy Population of the Milky Way
We use the publicly available subhalo catalogs from the via Lactea simulation along with a Gpc-scale Nbody simulation to understand the impact of inhomogeneous reionization on the satellite galaxy population of the Milky Way. The large-volume simulation is combined with a model for reionization that allows us to predict the distribution of reionization times for Milky Way mass halos. Motivated ...
متن کاملCoupling between satellite dwarfs and the Milky Way warp
The perturbations of satellite galaxies, in particular the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), have been repeatedly proposed and discounted as the cause of the Milky Way warp. While the LMC may excite a wake in the Galactic dark matter halo that could provide sufficient torque to excite a warp of the observed magnitude, its orbit may be incompatible with the orientation of the warp’s line of nodes. T...
متن کاملHow common is the Milky Way - satellite system alignment ?
The highly flattened distribution of satellite galaxies in the Milky Way presents a number of puzzles. Firstly, its polar alignment stands out from the planar alignments commonly found in other galaxies. Secondly, recent proper motion measurements reveal that the orbital angular momentum of at least 3, and possibly as many as 8, of the Milky Way’s satellites point (within 30 degrees) along the ...
